I don’t expect anything from my return. Centuries I spent roaming Italy and Alaska and centuries I spent after leaving this town for her. I left because I know that we can’t be together even though I wanted to and I know that she’s not safe with me. Someone will always be with her—not a stranger but a person I know that can protect her and love her, the same as I did.
I don’t know if how long she lived after I left, I don’t know if she had a wonderful, beautiful life nor if she got married, have kids… but there’s one thing I know that is inevitable when I left years ago, this little town that she lived in is safe and peaceful.
I stepped out of my car carrying my suitcase. The sound of the car door when I shut it seems to echo. I stared at the old Victorian house that me and my sister once lived in. I asked the cleaning crew to fix and clean it up before this day. The house still looks the same, secluded in this towns’ forest; surrounded by green trees and little animals, in that thought it made my thirst stir in my throat. I haven’t hunt since I went back to this town, although my sister, irritatingly, asked me to hunt last night—I should come with her.
I walked toward the house slowly then I remembered an old but clear memory, vampires’ memories are very clear and permanent that’s why I could still see her as I walk on these brick steps buried verdantly on the ground towards the house. I could see clearly her face as it lit up when she smiles under the light of the moon and the stars, how her skin glowed like her brown eyes and how we stood gazing at each other on this porch…
I opened the door of the house and it looked exactly the same; wooden floor boards, white walls, antique furniture’s that my sister collected, a huge fire place on the living room and an old staircase leading to the second floor where the same empty rooms are.
As soon as I settled my bag on the wooden floor, a gust of wind blew past me…
Naomi: huh… (She stood in front of me, both of her hands on her waist. She sighed and spoke in a bored tone) still the same.
Stephen: you should settle your things in your room, Naomi.
Naomi: I distinctly remembered telling you that I want to be called, Mimi. (She turned around and grimaced.)
Stephen: like a cat? (I teased.)
Naomi: Ha-ha, Stephen. Really not cool. (She rolled her eyes.)
Stephen: (I chuckled lightly.) fine, (I smiled in amusement) Mi-mi. (I emphasized her name)
Naomi: you’re annoying. (She rolled her eyes again.) Wait, (her face turned serious and business-like) are we going to school? Because if we don’t… you know what I’m like when I’m bored.
Stephen: (And I don’t like it when she’s bored… it’s ineffable. I chuckled lightly and smiled at my younger sister—although she’s very much older than any other human baby sister.) Yes, we’re attending school.
Naomi: ‘Kay! (She grinned then danced her way to the stairs. I started to make my way towards the living room when Naomi spoke in a gentle, careful tone) uhmm… Stephen, (I turned around and saw her at the middle of the staircase) we came back because you wanted to know how her life had been when we left, right? (She gazed at me with patience)
I do want to know how her life had been, the life that I don’t want to take from her. I answered Naomi with a weak nod. She nodded too then smiled thoughtfully. She turned around then in a flash she’s already on her room. I could hear the whooshing sound upstairs. I know after that, my sister already understands.
* * * * * * *
Monday morning, it’s the first day of school here in Green High and the weathers perfect—for me and my sister. Everyone is wearing their jackets and although the cold weather doesn’t really matter to me and Naomi—in fact it’s perfect—we still wore our jackets for camouflage.
When we arrived on the parking lot of the school, I veered my car towards an open space and stepped on the breaks. Before I turned off the engine Naomi grinned with enthusiasm, she loves attention and she’s definitely getting it as soon as we step outside of the car.
Naomi: let’s get it started! (She announced before opening her door, I opened mine after her)
I put on my jacket and shut the door, I looked around and saw that everyone was looking at us, but that is not my number one concern now. I have to be very careful, because people might recognize us.
I looked at Naomi with cautious eyes, she bob her head lightly then flipped her long straight black hair and back to her audience. We walked side by side towards the school door.
We didn’t bother to fake some transcripts or something; I compelled the administrator to enroll us. Naomi compelled the little red-haired lady to make us some fake ID’s and papers using the name of our parents, Victoria and Bryce Sears. We had to change our names so that no one will suspect that we once lived here centuries ago.
The red-haired lady gave us our class schedules. When we went out of the administrators’ office, Naomi went enthusiastically to her first class. She walked confidently in the hallway full of students; she blends easily although a lot of people—mostly guys—gives her a second look as she pass by.
I looked at the paper that the administrator gave us and studied it quickly. I caught a scent that is either familiar or a scent that is so tempting. I followed it and it led me to a room and the scent was getting strong. I stopped at the door and looked inside. Students we’re scattered in each corner of the room, some have noticed me so I went in, I walked inside and sat on a chair at the back of the room. Everyone looked at me when I settled myself but my eyes scanned the room looking for something where the scent came from.
Then a brown-haired guy approached my seat and sat on the chair in front of me.
Brad: hey. I’m brad Sullivan. (He extended his arm and offered his hand)
Stephen: (I smiled back for his friendliness but also hesitating because if I shook his hand he might get shivers but I took it anyway and shook it carefully like I’m barely touching his hand) I’m Bryce Sears. Nice to meet you, brad. (I let go of his hand quickly)
Brad: (he smiled a little then stared at his hand then mine.) you’re hands are cold.
Stephen: yeah, must be the cold weather. (I said casually.)
Brad: huh. (He hesitated for a second then went to being friendly again.) You’re new in town too, right? I saw your sister earlier.
Stephen: yes, we are.
Brad: does she have a… (He faltered then smiled awkwardly) never mind.
Stephen: No. she doesn’t have a boyfriend, brad. But she’s… complicated.
Brad: Ha! I get it! You’re playing the protective brother, right? I get that a lot! (He grimaced. I chuckled lightly too.)
The teacher went in and I almost forgot the scent I was looking for. Now that it’s closer it smelled distinctive; like a new flower that haven’t never grew to this earth. It’s different from the others but so sweet and lovely and… tempting; it’s a scent like no other.
The teacher went on with the first lesson. It was not hard to understand what Mr. Johnson is lecturing about because I’ve studied repeatedly in my whole existence so I didn’t bother understanding it over again, I focused on the scent and remembered her. Julia.
I noticed that someone is watching me so I turned my head around and catches her staring at me. She immediately looked down to her book and I could see her cheek blushed. I smiled at her then went back to listen to Mr. Johnson.
The lesson about biology ended and all of the students burst out of the room seconds after the bell rang. I stood up and started to move when the girl I caught staring at me walked pass me and it made me stop; it was the scent I was looking for. When I looked for her, she already went outside to the hallway full of other students.
I tried to follow her scent but it vanished.
Naomi: hey big brother! (She slapped my shoulder and stood in front of Me. when I didn’t answer she looked suddenly alarmed) does something happened? Is something wrong? Stephen? (She whispered my true name)
Stephen: (I shook my head and grimaced) No, no. it’s okay. Let’s go.
Naomi nodded once but still curious then followed me as we walk towards the opposite direction from where the mysterious girl disappeared.
* * * * * * *
I walked towards my next subject and getting out of that biology class is such a bummer. Maggie saw my expression when I entered my second class.
Maggie: what’s up with you? (As soon as I entered the room, she sat next to my seat.)
Sam: bummer. (I mumbled as I sat in my chair)
Maggie: you didn’t even talk to him?
Sam: nope. (I grimaced.)
Maggie: it’s your fault you know, you we’re right there but you didn’t talk to him. (She tsked me.)
Sam: I’m a coward. (I whined.)
Maggie: so, what does he look like up close? (She pushed her seat closer to mine and spoke in low volume.)
Sam: he’s okay. (I bit my bottom lip)
Maggie: ha! I know you Samantha Marie Lithgow; you only bit your lip over Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. (She pointed out)
Sam: Okay, fine! He’s…
Maggie: he’s… handsome like a sculpture? Epic like painted by known painters? (She prompted)
Sam: No. he’s… perfect. (I said; lost in thought.)
Maggie: Oh… (She said slowly and accusingly) okay Ms. Dreamy, snap out of it. (She jeered.)
Then the room went silent so we looked to where they were staring at. An angel-like female walked inside the room. Her hair dark like black ink and straight like it had never been touched by any hairdresser. Her skin was so white like it had never been hit by sunlight and a lady-like figure that makes me want to blame myself for eating all the chocolates from last New Year, although Maggie was the one who kept supplying me with it. Her red full lips looked like an apple and her cat-like eyes are tantalizing. She’s like branded Snow White. She sat gracefully next to my seat on the right while Maggie sat on my left; slowly. I know it’s rude to stare at someone but we just can’t help to stare at her—in fact she looked like the guy that me and Maggie are talking about earlier. She looked back at me and stared at me emotionless. I smiled at her but she didn’t.
Sam: is there something on my face? (I whispered to Maggie without breaking my stare at the lady-like female staring back at me)
Maggie: None. (Maggie whispered back.)
The girl continued staring at me and I was starting to feel really awkward. Then in another more seconds, she opened her full lips and a voice sweet and small like a child spoke…
Naomi: Hi. (She smiled.)
Sam and Maggie: Hi. (We smiled back awkwardly)
Naomi: you smell good.
Sam: (I chuckled weirdly) huh?
Naomi: that’s a compliment. I’m Victoria Sears. (She smiled like an angel)
Sam: I’m Sam Lane (I pointed at Maggie and Maggie smiled back) this is Maggie Bradford.
Naomi: lane? (Her eyebrows pulled together)
Sam: yes.
Naomi: Oh.
Ms. Thomas entered the room and since then Naomi didn’t speak further.
When the lecture ended, Naomi stood up and faced us.
Naomi: nice to meet you, Maggie and sam. (She smiled like an angel again)
Maggie: nice to meet you too. (Maggie smiled back)
Sam: see you later. (I said casually)
Naomi: of course. (She turned around and went outside to the hallway)
Maggie: huh. That was… awkward. (She mumbled.)
Sam: yeah. She’s very beautiful though.
Maggie: I agree.
I haven’t seen the guy from the biology class, and it’s quite frustrating. Maggie went to her next class while I went to my P.E.
After changing to my jogging pants and plain white t-shirt, I went to the gym full of students. On the other side of the wide huge gym, the school’s basket ball team is practicing while the other side is bound to our class. I approached my new classmates.
The P.E teacher went in front of the class wearing a green sweat shirt and a red sweat pants, she looked like Santa clauses helper but in a less friendly way. She looked at us first, grimaced then cleared her throat before she spoke.
Mrs. Cook: ladies, I won’t treat you princesses’ here. This is about being strong and pushing you to the limits. (She set aside her clip board and stood straight) first lesson… running. Let’s start! Line up! (She blew her whistle.) Circle the whole gym. You have to run until I told you to stop!
After 2 and half hours of running, my legs feel so heavy. I feel like crawling my way out to the gym. When I was finally outside of the gym, the cool wind on my face feels so nice after sweating for hours. As I was about to step outside the gym, I suddenly felt off balance on the second step, I felt my right foot struggled to stand right, enough to carry my weight, and then in a snap my whole body was falling towards the ground then “oomph!” I’m not sure if I fell to the ground because I’m pretty sure that falling to the ground hurts but I’m not.
Alex: are you okay? (An anxious voice asked. I slowly opened my eyes then saw the ground. So I didn’t fell then I noticed two strong arms held me securely, I turned my head towards my savior.)
His face was filled with worry; his forehead creased. But aside from his reaction, his face looks so soft. Staring at his eyes is like staring at the bluest ocean; so peaceful to stare at.
Alex: are you hurt? (He asked again then I noticed that his sounded like a piano played in D major.)
I finally moved my whole body and gently push myself from him.
Sam: I’m sorry for that. (I apologized quickly. I put both of my hands on both side of my face trying to cool down my hot cheeks.)
Alex: no, it’s okay. I’m glad I caught you on time. (He smiled.)
Sam: yeah. Thanks so much. If not for you my sorry face would have been buried on the ground now.
Alex: (He chuckled) you should be careful.
Sam: yeah, noted.
Alex: I’m Alex Lithgow. (He offered his hand.)
Sam: (I shook his hand lightly) I’m Samantha Lane, nice to meet you.
Alex: same. (We released hands then he pointed to the gym’s door) are you attending your P.E?
Sam: yeah.
Alex: Mrs. Cook?
Sam: yes.
Alex: I missed it. I was supposed to be in your class.
Sam: you should be thankful you didn’t attend at all. (I mused)
Alex: (He studied my face for a brief second then he smiled agreeing.) yeah. I guess I should be. (We both laughed.)
Alex excused himself after that little chat. He said that he has to go to his next class. I immediately went to my locker and drank the whole content of Gatorade. I really need energy.
Maggie: hey! (She tapped me on the shoulder)
Sam: hi. (I turned to her.)
Maggie: (She laughed) that’s the reason I skip P.E.
Sam: but there’s a shining bright light to my gloomy experience in P.E. (I smirked)
Maggie: oh yeah? What’s that?
Sam: I met someone. (I continued to make her want more of the juicy topic)
Maggie: who? Who? (She asked curiously)
Sam: (I laughed) a guy. He’s name is Alex Lithgow, a freshmen like us.
Maggie: Alex? (She got more curious) okay, okay, tell me all about it! (She looked sneaky about it; like she’s keeping the little juicy information from everybody)
Sam: he’s in my P.E class, so that means, P.E is not so bad at all. (I announced, I was feeling a bit smug about it)
Maggie: (She groaned.) now I want to enroll in your P.E class.
Sam: (I stuck out my tongue at her the smiled) too bad.
Maggie: (She rolled her eyes.) anyways, what does he look like? Is he cuter than the guy in your biology class?
Sam: hmm… (I pretended that I have to think about it when honestly, the guy from the biology class really caught my attention, and now that Maggie reminded me of him, I forgot my need to see him again)
Maggie: (She waved her both hands on my view) hello? Earth calling Sam! (She raised her eyebrow)
Sam: (I smiled at her sheepishly) sorry. Okay, right! (I went back to our topic) well, he looks charming and friendly. He very much looks like a fairy tale prince with a rich blonde wavy hair and clear blue eyes. (I said casually)
Maggie: (she groaned again) I want to see him!!! Why do you always get the class with hot guys?!
After Maggie whined about my luck having classes with hot guys, the time passes quickly; it’s time to go home.
I feel so bummed when I didn’t get the chance to see him again—the biology guy. Maggie said that maybe my luck is only limited but she was just being bitter.
Maggie excused herself when we were heading home; she said that she has somewhere to go so she left me alone on the streets.
The sun was setting and the wind is getting colder than earlier. I let my hair down so that it could cover my cold ears. After Maggie left, the street was abandoned, there were no people anywhere, even the birds stopped chirping; it felt weird and scary.
I walked as fast as I could towards my house. When I reached our front porch it felt like someone was looking at me, I know it’s completely insane to feel that but I couldn’t move my whole body to turn and look around so I twisted the door knob panicky and burst inside. When I was inside the house I exhaled in relief.
Laura Lane: Sam? Is that you? (My mom called coming from the kitchen)
Sam: (I tried to make my voice even; I cleared my throat before speaking) ah, yes mom! I’m going upstairs, okay?
I didn’t wait for her answer. I rushed to the stairs and into my room. As soon as I was in my room, I feel a bit relaxed. I slumped on my bed and exhaled deeply. I don’t know why I was so scared, that was my first time to get scared like that.
I stood up from my bed and went to my window, it’s already dark outside and I think it will help me relax if I let the cold wind breeze inside my room. My window’s view is the street so it’s not so bad to hear the cars pass by. I pushed the white curtains to the side, and then when I looked outside; I was so surprised to see that someone was looking at my window from the middle of the street. He looked so familiar, if I’m not mistaken, he’s the biology guy. He wore a black t-shirt and a black pants, I’m not afraid of him because he looks like a dark angel. His skin white and eyes that feels like pealing your skin. I tried to look closely but when I blinked… he’s gone.
Did I really saw him? Is that just a hallucination? I shook my head after staring at the empty street outside my window. The door bell rang and it made me jump.
* * * * * * *
I couldn’t help but to see her. Her scent is so familiar that it’s so intriguing.
I went back to the old Victorian house. Naomi stood in the staircase in front of the door.
Naomi: I saw her and… I smelled her too. (She said in a low voice like she’s embarassed)
Stephen: I have to know why her scent smelled like Julia.
Naomi: but Stephen…
Stephen: but what, Naomi? Are you going to tell me that this is insane or a waste of time? (I straightened up) You know that Julia’s scent is something that I know; the scent of her blood, her soul, her whole mortality. (I noticed my voice was hard and debating as I look at Naomi’s sad expression) you know that, Naomi. (I walked towards the living room and slump on a chair in front of the fire place.)
Naomi: (She sighed) okay, brother. Loosen up. (Then I heard her on her room)
I buried my face on both of my hands. She, that girl, I have to know her because even though Julia’s scent and her scent is alike, there’s a different pull from that girl.
Naomi and I went for a hunt before going to school. Naomi didn’t bring back the topic last night while we hunt,—that’s a good thing—but my mind is pestering me instead. I have plan A and plan B. Plan A, I’ll have to get close to her and get the answers myself, or Plan B, I might have to find everything about Julia after I left.
I veered the car towards an empty slot in the school’s parking lot next to a Chevy truck, as soon as I cut the engine, Naomi was already outside of the car. It’s the second day of school and the people started to ignore everyone, so Naomi’s “unusual speed” is not so appealing to human eyes anymore, except her beauty.
I started to feel the pull again; stronger and closer. Naomi stoop down to her window and snickered.
Naomi: she’s here. (She winked.)
I stepped outside of the car. I saw a black car approaching an empty slot opposite to ours. When the car stopped, the driver’s car door opened and a short blond haired girl stepped out from the car. Not her. The passenger door opened, and then the pull grew stronger and stronger when she stepped outside. The wind blew her chestnut brown hair so that it will show her face. The blond girl walked beside her as they pass us.
Naomi: Hey! (Naomi called after the girl and her friend; they both stopped and look) Wait up! (Then Naomi danced towards them) can I walk with you guys? ‘Cause my brother’s a bore. (She rolled her eyes)
The blond girl answered: sure. (She smiled at Naomi. the brunette girl smiled at me then looked away coyly.)
Naomi: okay! (Naomi looked at me then winked) see you later.
Then they left. I suddenly felt pinned from where I stood. Then I try to remember if I was able to smile back at her or if my frozen lip is too hard to cooperate.
Today’s first subject is literature. Ms. Garner started the class with Romeo’s line from the famous story of the star-crossed lovers who died tragically. I’ve been told of that story many times and honestly, I don’t know if I could give my life for the one I love—I mean my existence. The pull hit me again. The door opened…
Ms. Garner: oh, there you are.
Sam: here it is, Ms. Garner. (She handed a small book to Ms. Garner)
Ms. Garner: thank you, Samantha. (They smiled at each other for a second then the girl, err, Samantha, walked towards the right corner of the room; few chairs from my seat.)
Ms. Garner started to explain the book n her hand. She was telling the class that the book is the original copy of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. I didn’t paid attention that much to what miss garner was saying; I stared at Samantha who was paying attention to the lecture. Every 5 seconds she’ll look down to the book on top of her desk and then she’ll smile to herself as she read. After a few more seconds, she’ll place her left cheek to her left hand and it makes me a little frustrated not seeing her face.
Ms. Garner: now class, I will give you homework for next week. Here’s what you’re going to do, you are going to partner-up to recite a few lines from the book ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Guys will take Romeo’s line and girls will take on Juliet. ‘Kay?
As soon as Ms. Garner and some of the students left the room, I stood up and headed to the door when a soft voice called after me.
Samantha: hey Bryce! (I looked back and saw her right behind me.) You’re Bryce, right?
Stephen: yes.
Samantha: well, I was just thinking if you and I should partner-up for the Romeo and Juliet homework. (She smiled coyly)
Stephen: Oh. (I thought of that for a moment. I don’t want to join that recital thing at first because I kind of hated that story.)
Samantha: (her expression as she waited for my answer turned from hopeful to anxious.) it’s okay if you don’t want to. (She chuckled lightly.) What was I thinking? (She muttered to herself as she looked to the window, she said that almost in a whisper. I know she thought that I’m not able to hear that which is impossible for a hearing as sharp as a snake.)
Stephen: sure. (I finally said with a smile)
Samantha: (She looked at me surprised then she smiled again) Oh. Okay. Great! (She chuckled lightly) hmm… I think we should practice with the lines…
Stephen: yeah, yeah. I agree.
Samantha: so… when would you like to practice?
Stephen: Ahm… tomorrow… if that’s okay with you?
Samantha: Tomorrow it is! (She said cheerfully)
We stared at each other for moment, smiling. She had an irresistible smile and hazel eyes that makes you want to look right through it. She chuckled then blushed.
Samantha: okay. I’ll see you later.
Stephen: yeah. See you, Samantha.
Samantha: Oh, just Sam. (She said before going to the door)
Stephen: Sam, Right. (I smiled as I follow her to the door.)
Samantha: (she turned around to face Me.) bye. (She flashed her sweet smile)
Stephen: bye, Sam. (She continued to walk to the opposite direction to where I was heading. Then the pull was fading…)
Naomi giggled as soon as she saw me walking towards the car.
Naomi: so Romeo, (She cleared her throat) aren’t you suppose to gush with excitement now? (She mocked)
Stephen: (In amazement, I chuckled) get in the car Ms. Mimi the cat. (I teased back. She stuck her tongue out and rolled her eyes before getting inside the car)
Later in the evening, Naomi and I decided to go to a bar in the town. It’s a bar made in wood with lots of lights. When we went in, the bar was filled with people drinking, talking and playing at the billiard pool on the left side of the bar. Naomi went ahead and walked towards bartender.
Naomi: whiskey, please. (She smiled at the bartender)
Bartender: (He smiled back at her, stunned) sure!
Naomi: (She looked back at me as I sat next to her) are you going to drink?
Stephen: No.
Naomi: oh yeah, (She covered her left cheek with her left hand and whispered) lots of bunnies, huh? (She winked at me then laughed)
Stephen: (She sat straight again as she received her drink) no one’s going to carry you if we’re both drunk. (I reminded her)
She rolled her eyes then slurp on her whiskey. I looked around the bar and saw a familiar painting hanging on the wall near the billiard pool. I stood up to see it closer.
Naomi: where are you going?
Stephen: I’m just going to check on something. (I said not breaking my gaze at the painting.)
I walked towards the painting. As I stood in front of it, it felt oddly familiar. I saw this picture before but that was centuries ago at the old gallery that got burned down, and this painting has been burned with the rest of the gallery. This painting is called “hunters”. A picture telling the story of the vampire hunters who are destined to protect humans from vampires and with that, they are bound to kill and destroy immortals. They exist because we exist.
The memories flashed back like an old movie being played again.
It’s april 13, 1956 that the Hunters discovered about vampires living in Chicago. As soon as the vampires were exposed, Hunters slay each vampire until only few of our kind left Chicago for the sake of their existence. the hunters felt successful because they banished the vampires from there city—or so they think.
A large group of vampires who treated themselves family, stayed because their secret hadn’t been exposed to anyone most especially to the hunters. I was one of them.
Charles: (He stood on the balcony and watch as the hunters slay our kind. I stood next to him; his forehead creased. Charles is the same as my age but he became a vampire long before I was. We both look like 18 years old but he’s older than me.) It’s heartbreaking to witness our friends die in the hands of the people who think we are their enemies. (His voice was like an 18 year old kid but has a deep grave sound)
Stephen: we are not their enemies? What are we then? (I said bitterly)
Charles: (He looked at me; his expression was soft and understanding) brother, we are dammed because we became like this… but we can choose to live a different way in order to save our soul, to exist for the good.
Stephen: (I snorted) our soul!
Charles patted my shoulder and walked inside, leaving me at the balcony. I look down and watch as vampires get shot and killed. Some of them strive to survive; snarling and growling at their killer but in the end… they turn into ashes blown by the wind. There is no soul; just ashes.
I saw a vampire pleading for his existence. The hunter just stared pointing his gun to him. The vampire kneeled down in front of him but the hunter pulled the trigger then in a snap the vampire was gone, ashes were scattered on the floor.
The hunter turned around and looked at my direction. I stared back at him.
Charles: Stephen? (I broke my gaze at the hunter and look back at Charles) Come. Arkin needs us. (I nodded to him and before I followed him inside, I looked back at the hunter… but he was gone.)
A deep voice interrupted my thoughts.
Alex: it’s a very good painting. (I looked at him. he stood next to me looking at the painting too.)
Stephen: it is. (I replied.)
Alex: you must be, Bryce sears?
Stephen: yes, you are? (We were both staring at the painting)
Alex: Hunter. (I looked at him but he was still looking at the painting. He finally looked at me then smiled) I mean the painting. It’s called ‘hunters’.
Stephen: yeah. I know. (I smiled a little.)
Alex: I’m Alex. (He shifted his torso so that he was facing me and looked at me seriously. After a few seconds, he chuckled) ‘Kay man, see you around. (He patted my shoulder once and walked pass me)
I followed him with my eyes as he made his exit to the door.
Naomi: what is it? (Naomi said in a casual tone as if she was standing beside me the whole time.)
Stephen: I don’t know. There’s something about that guy…
Naomi: yeah? I don’t know you find guys interesting now.
Stephen: that’s not what I meant.
Naomi: I know. I’m just kidding. Well, I think I have to agree with you with that. It’s like… (She paused; thinking for the right thing to say) like he has a weird aura.
Stephen: let’s just be careful with him around. (I looked again at the painting)
Naomi: but he’s just a harmless human, Stephen. (She said in a whiny way)
Stephen: well, it will not hurt us if we behave, Naomi. (I put out my brother-superior thing every time Naomi’s hard to reason with especially in times like these.)
Naomi: (She grimaced then rolled her eyes) Fine! (She stood still next to me and stared at the painting too.) What painting is this? Four men with leather jackets and faded jeans holding a… (Her sentence broke and I’m sure that she was looking at the gun that was being held by the four me in the painting) is that…
Stephen: The hunter’s gun. (I prompted)
Naomi: How… did it…? This was supposed to be ashes a long time ago… like the hunters. (She said the last word with disgust)
Stephen: I don’t know.
Naomi: do you think some of them survived?
Stephen: I’d like to think that none of them did.
* * * * * * *
Maggie: hey! Did you see Angie? We have a project to do. (She said walking towards me in the hallway)
Sam: No.
Maggie: Geez. She always disappears if we have something to do. So, how are you? (She studied my face as I put my books inside my locker)
Sam: I’m extremely fine.
Maggie: oh yeah… why’s that?
Sam: because I’m Juliet and you know that she’s my favorite fictional character.
Maggie: I know… and?
Sam: well, we have a Romeo and Juliet recital next week and Stephen and I are partners. (I tried to look casual about it)
Maggie: (She grinned) Ok, who ask who? (She was clearly mocking me)
Sam: well… that doesn’t matter ‘Kay! (I shut my locker and took her arm just before she rolled her eyes and pulled her to the hallway) now, let’s go find Angie!
We came to find Angie at the gym, library, soccer field, classrooms, even the rooftop, but there’s no sign of her.
Sam: are you sure she came to school today?
Maggie: yes! She’s in my Spanish class. (We stopped in the middle of the school campus)
Alex: Hi! (He waved a little as he approached us)
Sam: Alex! Hey.
Alex: hey. (He smiled at me politely) are you looking for someone?
Sam: how did you know?
Alex: well, I saw both of you coming back and forth in the gym. We had basketball ball practice earlier.
Sam: Oh. Hum… yeah. We’re looking for our friend, she’s kind of missing.
Alex: (His face was suddenly serious) where did you last saw her?
Maggie: (she cleared her throat) at… at the canteen.
Alex: does she look like something’s troubling her? (I suddenly thought of a psychiatrist.)
Maggie: (She thought for a moment) well, she looked like she has no sleep, you know, like a zombie.
Sam: huh. That’s weird… Angie’s not the type of person that will stay up all night.
Alex: I gotta go. (He said in a strong sure voice) see you around, sam. (He smiled at me and Maggie) you too, Maggie.
Sam: ‘Kay! See you later. (We watch him as he ran to the field and disappeared)
Maggie: that was weird.
Sam: well, at least someone knows were looking for a missing person. Hey, did you call Angie’s parents?
Maggie: I did… earlier before I saw you at the hallway.
Sam: Hmm. Okay, let’s meet each other later at havens bar.
Maggie: okay. See you!
Maggie and I parted; she walked to the opposite way from mine. Angie and I are not close friends, but we know each other and respect each other. Angie has a face that half of the girls envy and boys wanted. Her curly red hair compliments her pale yet pinkish skin. Her eyes are a shade of green and lips red and pouty. Everybody looks up to her; a straight “A” student, a certified volunteer for our town, and she can sing. Based on her achievements and popularity, I can say she’s a very good person.
I decided to walk the streets to my house because the cold wind feels good on my face. The streets’ side was filled with tall green trees and colorful flowers overflows the fence of each house. I reached my fairytale house. My dad is an engineer and he designed our house inspired by one of my fairytale books.
I went inside and walked towards the kitchen.
Sam: Mom? (I called but no one answered then I saw at the table a note from my mom: “Sammy, I’ll be out for the day, Okay? Your aunt called me and she wants me to be at her house. I’ll be back tonight. Call of need anything. Love you—Mom.” I sighed then left the note at the table.)
I went to my room and settled my bag on the chair of my study table. I feel so exhausted that I felt dragging myself to my bed and collapse in it. My heavy head feels so good on my soft pillow and then an unfamiliar forest flashed in my eyes and I was there. I could feel the grass wet on my barefoot and the forest smell on my nose. I started to walk and saw a wide clearing covered with green grass and colorful flowers, the sunlight made it a spot light for it. I started to walk towards it when I heard a snarl coming from the other side of the clearing. I stood frozen from where I stood and watched the predator step inside the clearing. It was some sort of a tiger, black fur; its eyes are dark and like a human’s eyes. It was staring at me, or more like studying me. It started to walk towards me in a graceful way, eyes still locked on mine. Sheesh! Does it find me yummy? I don’t want to be its meal! I felt my knees weak and my blood is drained from my face. The tiger’s mouth opened little as if it was about to laugh. He was starting to get close, and close until he was right in my face. I realized I was sitting on the ground sobbing. Then I knew I was going to die so I waited for the tiger to eat me.
Alex: (It startled me when I heard gunshot) you’re here. (I know that voice so I slowly turn my head to the right and saw Alex but he looks different; he looks like a man on his 30’s rather than a guy on his teen.)
The black furred animal veered its body to face Alex. He growled at him but Alex stood confident and ready to shoot an antique gun that he’s holding. I know I should run for my life but my legs are pinned on the ground even if my brain is working overtime to command every part of my muscles.
Alex: you have to run, Sam!
His voice boomed in my ear and suddenly it felt like I have to really run. I slowly stood up and felt that I’m in control of myself now, I turn around and ran as fast as I could but not knowing where to go then as I was running, a bright light blinded my eyes… and then I woke up.
The sunlight creeping inside my window was blinding me when I open my eyes. That dream felt so real that I was still catching my breath. I sat up—still panting—and slowly move my legs to get out of my bed.
I walked towards my window and let loose of the curtains to block the sunlight.
Sam: it’s just a dream (I told myself before heading downstairs)
That dream keeps on repeating in my head the whole day at school. I don’t know why it makes me nervous because my dreams before never felt like this. I know I might over think it but why is Alex there? And what’s the meaning of it? And the black predator looks so human; intelligent.
The bell rang and the empty hallway was now filled with students headed to the cafeteria.
I was not hungry at all; I think I lost my appetite so I walked outside to breathe some fresh air. I sat on the bench outside of the school building and sigh.
Alex: hi.
Sam: (I looked at the person staring at me) hey.
Alex: mind if sit?
Sam: oh yeah, sure.
Alex: (he sat on the other side of the bench) you okay?
Sam: I don’t know.
Alex: I’ll take that as a ‘yes’. (He looked at me then smiled)
Sam: (I chuckled a bit) I just keep on thinking of my dream last night.
Alex: Oh. Is that such a problem that you can’t forget it?
Sam: it just feels weird. (I laughed a little; feeling a bit silly) you’re actually in it, you know? (I smiled at him)
Alex: really? So I’m a part of that weird dream. (I laughed with him)
Sam: you’re quite brave there. You’re my savior.
Alex: savior?
Sam: Yeah. You saved me from the black predator with your gun. Cool right?
Alex: (He was silent for a moment then chuckled) well, good thing I’m not bore in your dream.
Sam: (I laughed) why are you here anyway? Aren’t you going to eat?
Alex: why are you here?
Sam: to breathe some fresh air.
Alex: same as yours. I had to escape from some girls inside. (He winked then smiled. In a very weird way, his smile made me smile unconsciously; it’s like his smile is a magnet, it makes everything positive.)
Sam: I didn’t get a chance to ask about you… (I looked at him for some sort of defense but he just smiled at me waiting for me to continue) well, are you living alone here?
Alex: Yes.
Sam: where are your parents?
Alex: they are living at our hometown… Canada.
Sam: do you have brothers… sisters?
Alex: No. I’m the only child.
Sam: Oh. (Short silence) if… (I hesitated before asking him but I asked him anyway) if both of your parents live in Canada… why did you live here?
He was silent and that’s my cue to stop asking. I looked at his face that looked so peaceful while looking ahead to the trees.
Alex: (He chuckled then looked at me smiling) sorry. I was lost in thought.
Sam: (I smiled back) Oh no! It’s fine.
Alex: actually Sam, (He heaved a sigh and straightened on his seat) my life is such a bore that the only reason I left Canada and live here alone is to study in a well-acknowledge school and to be independent.
Sam: Oh. (I smiled as he smiled) that is a bore.
